How roofing insurance claims work in Ontario
Despite your best efforts to keep the roof of your home in great condition, something beyond your control has caused some damage and now you need to file a claim against your home insurance. If you’ve never done this before then you might not know what to expect. Here’s how insurance claims for your roof work in Ontario.
Check your Coverage
Coverage for home insurance isn’t universal as most companies offer coverage based on the premiums you pay. For example, if your roof is less than 10 years old then your insurance company may provide coverage for the entire cost of repair but if your roof is more than 10 years old they may only cover the depreciated value. The best way to determine what you’re covered for is to call your insurance company to determine your policy, and change it if you’re unhappy with it. There is always a chance your claim could be denied, so checking coverage before you file is important.
Start the Process Right Away
As soon as you know there is damage to your roof, start the process of a claim. There may need to be assessments done or contractors come out to determine the extent of the damage so the sooner you start that process the sooner it will be fixed.
Gather Documentation
If you have photos of the condition of your home before any damage this will be especially helpful, and any time you have work done update those photos. Then take photos of the damage for your insurance company to assess. It is important to take the damaged photos as soon after the damage is done as possible so that an accurate representation is given. Having proof will make the process of filing a claim, and getting reimbursed, that much easier.
Pay your Deductible
As with any insurance policy, home insurance has a deductible that must be paid. The amount will vary depending on the details of your policy, so you’ll have to check with your insurance company to determine how much this is. You should also be prepared that you may have to pay costs upfront and will then be reimbursed for the costs to fix your house.
Find a Contractor
Insurance companies will not pay out a policy that isn’t fixed by a licensed professional so you’ll want to make sure that the one you choose is legitimate. You may even want to search for a contractor who has experience working with insurance companies. You will have to prove you have a signed contract and either send photos of the finished work or have an inspector come out to ensure the work.
Get Reimbursed
Most insurance policies will, up to a certain amount, require that you pay the costs upfront and then they will reimburse you for costs. This may apply to your policy, or they might be the contractor directly for the work. These are details you’ll want to ask when you check on your policy coverage.
